BUENA VISTA, Va.—The United States Collegiate Athletic Association today announced sophomore catcher Sarah Edwards (Phoenix, Ariz.) as USCAA Softball Player of the Week.
"Sarah [Edwards] had a great week at the plate recording extra-base hits in clutch moments," said third-year Head Coach Duste Grawrock. "I've enjoyed seeing her continue to develop as a leader behind the dish as well."
Edwards hit .526 with a .684 on-base percentage last week, while registering eight RBI, eight runs scored, four doubles, three stolen bases and a home run.
The sophomore catcher's red-hot week was highlighted during the second game of Southern Virginia's doubleheader with Washington Adventist in which she went 3-for-3 with four RBIs, two runs scored, two doubles and two stolen bases helping the Knights secure a 13-1 victory over the Shock.
The following day, Saturday, Mar. 2, Edwards hit a three-run bomb over the left field fence accounting for all three of Southern Virginia's runs in a 4-3 loss to Randolph College. Edwards finished the contest 2-for-3 at the plate.
Edwards has helped Southern Virginia to its best start (4-6) in three seasons, while leading the team in batting average (.464), slugging percentage (.786), on-base percentage (.516), RBIs (9) and doubles (6), in addition to posting a 1.000 fielding percentage through ten games this season.
