Red-hot Panthers Take Two From Knights

Written by Chris Pendleton

FERRUM, Va.—The Southern Virginia University women's softball team dropped both games of its doubleheader at Ferrum College on Tuesday as the Knights fell to the red-hot Panthers 11-0 (five innings) and 9-1 (six innings).

With two wins over the Knights on Tuesday, Ferrum (11-1) pushed its current winning streak to eight games while Southern Virginia (1-7) has dropped seven of eight to begin the season.

Only three Knights—Sarah Edwards (Phoenix, Ariz.), Seneca Hartzel (Coolidge, Ariz.) and Dinah Rogers (Huntington Beach, Calif.)—recorded hits during Southern Virginia's first game against Ferrum's Kaitlyn Cutler, who pitched the entire five-inning shutout for the Panthers.

Southern Virginia faired a bit better in Game 2, scoring one run in the bottom of the fourth inning when Rogers singled allowing Edwards to score from second on an error by the Panther's center fielder.

The Knights were unable to add any more runs, however, as Ferrum invoked the mercy rule with its final run in the bottom of the sixth after scoring eight through the first four innings of play.

Softball has one day off before playing back-to-back games on Thursday and Friday, Mar. 9-10 against the University of Virginia at Wise (5-9) and Virginia Intermont College (8-10) respectively.
