BUENA VISTA, Va. — After strong outings in her last two starts, McKenzy MacKay today was named USCAA Co-Pitcher of the Week for Mar. 14-20.
MacKay, a freshman from Kaysville, Utah, got her first collegiate win on Tuesday, Mar. 15 at Mary Baldwin College by pitching a five-inning, four-hit, nine-strikeout shutout against the Fighting Squirrels.
While the shutout was impressive, MacKay took things up a notch in her next start by throwing her first career no-hitter on Friday, Mar. 18 against visiting NCAA Division II Washington Adventist University in an 8-0, five-inning Southern Virginia win.
MacKay retired 15 of the 19 Washington Adventist batters that she faced, striking out eight, walking three and hitting one.
"It was amazing," said MacKay of her memorable no-hitter. "The credit really goes to my teammates who made great plays behind me all game long."
MacKay has not given up a single run in her last 10 innings of work while recording 17 strikeouts and allowing only four hits. MacKay is 2-5 on the season with a 3.29 ERA.
