AKRON, Oh. After a disappointing loss in the second round, the Southern Virginia Softball team regrouped to beat PSU-Hazleton, 4-0, to take 5th at the USCAA National Tournament. The Knights looked to get a lead early, and did, as Lyndsay Mellor crossed home plate in the bottom of the first inning to get the team a 1-0 lead.
SVU was held at bay for the next two innings, but tacked on another run in the bottom of the fourth. Abbie Baxter crossed home plate after a bases loaded walk was issued to Chloe Stephens. The Knights finished off the scoring in the sixth inning when they added two runs. Kyla Christmas and Amanda Otto both came home to give the Knights the four-run advantage they would need to close out the season on a winning note.
Christmas finished a strong tournament by recording 12-strikeouts, and allowing only 2-hits for the entire game. PSU-Hazleton had runners in scoring position only three times, and never really threatened SVU.
The Knights finish their season at 23-10. The season will go down as one of the best in program history. The team finishes fifth at the USCAA tournament for the second time in a row.
