Knights Sweep Double Header To Take Series Against UMPI

BUENA VISTA, Va. An offensive explosion in the first game of a double header helped pace the Southern Virginia Softball team to the two-game sweep, and a series win over University of Maine- Presque Isle.  The Knights used a 7-run first inning to blow open the first game as they eventually won 10-2.

The highlight for the inning was an Abbie Baxter 3-run homerun, as SVU established a commanding lead for the game. Seven SVU batters got a hit, and Lindsay Mellor picked up two hits in the first inning as the hosts totaled 13-hits for the game.

Baxter had a monster of a game as she went 3-for-3 including the homerun, and batted in 5-runs.  Kyla Christmas again performed well in the field and at the plate. Christmas went 2-for-3 with 3-runs batted in, and added a solo homerun for good measure. Christmas stymied the Owls offense as she gave up only 3-hits and 1-earned run. She also struck out 5-batters while only walking two.

SVU tacked on two more runs in the second inning, and then ended with a run in the fifth to put the game away.

The Owls started off quickly in the second game looking to deadlock the series. With a run in the top of the first inning the Knights were under the gun to get back quickly. A pitchers duel ensued as Christmas and the UMPI hurler allowed 10-hits between the two teams in the game.

The Knights tied the game in the third inning after Christmas doubled, and was later brought home after a UMPI error allowed her to cross home plate. Lainie Thompson scored the winning run in the fourth inning after being an Abbie Fisher walk with the bases loaded allowed Thompson to come home.

The lead was enough for Christmas, who shut down the Owls the rest of the competition to give the Knights the win and the series win.

SVU moves to 12-4 on the season. The team will return to action March 26 when they host West Virginia Tech at Laurel Park. The first game is scheduled for 1:00 pm.
