SVU Splits Double-Header And Series With Sweet Briar

BUENA VISTA, Va. The Southern Virginia Softball team fell in the first game of the double-header 3-5, and rebounded in the second 5-3 to even the season series with Sweet Briar. The second leg of the series followed the same pattern as the first, as SVU lost the first game only to rebound and win the second game.

The Knights were able to get on the board first as Laura Tome and Chelsey Papworth scored in the bottom of the fifth inning. The Knights had been threatening earlier in the game, but had not sent anyone home until the fifth. SVU, however, could not hold on to the lead, as SBC put up their five runs in the top of the sixth.

The hosts could only muster 5-hit all game, but kept SBC to only 8-hits total. SVU had the bases loaded, and another runner in scoring position in both the sixth and seventh innings, but could only score one more before SBC closed out the game.

SVU made sure to start quickly with a lead, as Abbie Fisher came across in the bottom of the first inning. Papworth scored again in the fourth inning off a Mallory King double. Fisher scored the second of her three runs in the fifth inning as the Knight scored again in the fifth, before Fisher came across again in the sixth inning.

Amanda Otto pitched for the win, going seven innings. She gave up 6-hits striking out three batters.

The Knights move to 17-5 with the split. The team returns to action April 10, when it travels to play at Hood.
