DECATUR, IL. - Southern Virginia University defeated St. Joseph’s College of Brooklyn in the first round of the USCAA National tournament by the score of 5-2.

St. Joseph started the scoring with a run in the first inning on a walk and a double. They added to their lead in the third with another run on a single, a sacrifice and another single for a 2-0 lead. The Lady Knights didn’t hit the scoreboard until the bottom of the fourth when Amanda Otto (Cy-Fair HS, Cypress, TX) and Abby Baxter (W Jessamine HS, Nicholasville, KY) led off with singles, and Emma James (Boron HS, N Edwards, CA) doubled them both home to knot the score up at the end of four innings.

In the SVU fifth, Ali Krebs (Lebanon, OR) and Chloe Stephens (El Segundo, CA) led off with singles and were sacrificed up a base by Cara Joyner (Columbia Academy, Columbia, MS). Team captain, Abbie Fisher hit a two strike pitch out of the park for a dramatic three run homerun and a 5-2 lead for the Lady Knights. Then freshman pitcher Amanda Otto shut down the Lady Bears on no hits in the sixth and seventh innings to preserve the victory for SVU. For the game she allowed seven hits, walked one, and struck out six en route to pitching a complete game.

Offensively, the Knights had ten hits as Stephens, Fisher, Baxter, and Otto had two hits each; and Krebs and James each had a hit. The Knights are now 19-10 for the season.
