Lady Knights Out of Tournament

May 7, 2009

DECATUR, IL. - The Southern Virginia University “Lady Knights” were handed their second loss and eliminated from the USCAA National softball tournament by Penn State University (Beaver).

The Lady Lions were able to squeeze across a run in the third inning and held on for a 1-0 Win. Southern Virginia had scoring chances but was unable to get a timely hit to score a run. In the first inning, with one out Cara Joyner (Columbia Academy, Columbia, MS) singled and went to third on a double by Abbie Fisher (Mt Hood CC, Beaverton, OR) but was unable to score as the second and third outs were made.

In the third inning, the Knights had the bases loaded with no outs. However, a spectacular double play by PSU and a fly out ended that rally. Meanwhile freshman pitcher, Amanda Otto (Cy-Fair HS, Cypress, TX) who pitched well enough to win most games was keeping the game close as she held the Lady Lions to four hits for the day.

Offensively for SVU, Fisher and Joyner had two hits apiece; and Chloe Stephens (El Segundo, CA) and Sonja Septon (Utah Valley U, Orem, UT) each had a hit. Southern Virginia University garners fifth place in the tournament and ends the season with a 19-12 record while Penn State will go on to play St Mary of the Woods College for third place and the opportunity to place higher in the tournament.
