ROANOKE, Va. — The Southern Virginia University cross country teams had the opportunity Saturday morning to compete against several teams they will face at the NCAA Regional Meet. The Knights showed why they would be a threat come November after the men finished 5th and the women finished 3rd on Saturday at the ODAC Preview.
On the men's side, senior Michael Myers led the Knights by finishing 3rd overall in a field of 161 competitors and ahead of all other DIII runners. His 8K time of 25:32 was the program's best since the 2017 season.
Following Myers were a steady series of freshmen for the Knights. The pack of newcomers featuring Murray Bingham, Kazdyn Chandler, and Caden Eskelsen helped Southern Virginia score valuable points in the team standings. Their times of 26:52, 27:28, and 28:12 respectively provide optimism that the team's depth with continue to grow throughout the season.
Sophie Dryden continues to impress on the women's side as she led the Knights to a 3rd place finish out of 19 teams. With a time of 23:40, Dryden finds herself already among the best freshman in the Capital Athletic Conference.
Despite not having Jill Westman, the Knights were in the mix for finishing in the top two among teams in their region. Similarly to the men, the women featured three freshmen among their top-five finishers. Brittany Barton finished 22nd with a time of 24:54 and Tayma Vanek finished 41st with a time of 25:51.
The Knights return to action on September 28th when they head to the Hornet Harrier in Winchester, Va.
