BUENA VISTA, Va. — The Capital Athletic Conference today announced the 2019 preseason coaches' poll with the Southern Virginia University men's cross country team picked fourth.
The fourth-place selection is the highest the Knights have been on the CAC preseason coaches' poll, surpassing last season's poll at the fifth-place spot.
"The preseason poll is a testament to the strong work Coach May has put into this program the past three years as well as the previous coaches who helped found and develop the cross country program," said head coach Kyle Chandler.
Southern Virginia ended last season with their highest finish in program history since joining Division III with a third-place finish at the CAC Championships.
The Knights return Michael Myers who earned All-CAC First Team honors after placing sixth at the CAC Championships and All-Region honors at the South/Southeast Region Championships.
Also returning for Southern Virginia will be Kevin Shelley and John Curnutt who both ran consistently for the Knights in their top-seven.
"We have three returning runners and a handful of new runners," said Chandler. "I'm excited to see how the freshman coalesce with returning runners in creating a competitive team this season."
York (Pa.) starts as the preseason favorites after winning last year's CAC Championship.
The season begins on Friday, Aug. 30 at the UMW Open in Fredericksburg, Virginia.
