FREDERICKSBURG, Va. — The Southern Virginia University cross country teams started the 2018 season at the University of Mary Washington Opener, where the men placed second and the women finished third.
"This was the strongest opening race as a team we have had in my time here at Southern Virginia," said Head Coach Clint May. "I'm pleased with not only today but maybe more so with the how we are solidifying [in]a positive direction for our teams as a whole."
The men's team impressed as their top-five runners finished in the top 30 overall. Michael Myers paced the Knights with a dominant showing, finishing first-place and recorded a time of 15:20. Colter May added a 12th place finish, with freshman Hunter Lund finishing 18th to round out the top twenty. Kevin Shelley finished 22nd overall and freshman Brendan Scott placed 29th to round out the Knights' top-five finishers.
Sydney Bigelow led the women's team, finishing sixth in the four-kilometer race, with a time of 15:55. Freshman Jill Westman came in 17th for the Knights, followed by freshman Jessica Simpson (25th), sophomore Kate Huber (26th) and freshman Elora Smith.
The Knights will compete next Saturday, Sept. 8 at the James Madison Invitational in Harrisonburg, Va.
