NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – The Southern Virginia University men's and women's cross-country teams will compete in the 2017 Capital Athletic Conference Championship hosted by Christopher Newport University on Saturday.

The women's team will compete in the 6K race and the men's team will compete in the 8K race and Lee Hall Mansion.

The Knights are riding into the race with confidence after the women's team finished second in the Greensboro Hagan Stone Classic and finished 17 out of 31 teams in the Gettysburg Invitational. Leading the women's team is Morgan Bingham. Morgan was named CAC Athlete of the Week twice during the 2017 season. She has finished first in Greensboro and set a school record in Gettysburg while finishing 15 out of 286 racers.

The men's team has had an equally impressive record, finishing first in Greensboro and seventh out of 25 teams in Gettysburg. Leading the team is Mike Myers and Colter May who have gone back and forth as the team's lead runner.

Head coach Clint May is pleased with the preparation his team has gone through saying, "The Gettysburg meet had over 200 athletes in the race. I feel that that might have been the best preparation for what it will feel like in the opening half-mile of the race where it gets out strong and everybody's really tough and there is a lot of elbows being thrown around."

The women will start the day at 11:00 a.m. The men will follow once the women's race is finished.
