BUENA VISTA, Va.—The Southern Virginia men's cross country team had a good building year under the direction of first-year head coach Clint May, placing sixth at the CAC Championships and 24th at the NCAA Division III South/Southeast Regional Championships.
Injuries took three of the top five runners out for the Knights during the season, including senior Jefferson Chandler (West Linn, Ore.). The young squad relied on freshman brothers Kevin and Brandon Shelley, who consistently finished in first position.
Brandon Shelley (Clearfield, Utah) had an 8k personal best at the NCAA Regionals with a time of 28:14.88, beating his brother, Kevin, for the first time this season. Kevin Shelley (Clearfield, Utah) had his personal best of 28:26.8 at the Gettysburg Invitational.
The Knights will lose seniors Jefferson Chandler and John Leake (Peoria, Ariz.) this season. Chandler was a top-five runner in the CAC Championships, after missing races in the middle of the season, to help Southern Virginia place sixth. Leake had his career best in the 8k at Virginia Union with a time of 29:24.3.
In looking to the future, Coach May expects his teams to "embrace year-round running and bring in new students who are eager to run and experienced in competition."
