BUENA VISTA, Va.—Heading into his fourth season as head coach of the Southern Virginia University men's and women's cross country programs, Logan Davis revealed the 2014 season schedule Wednesday morning in Buena Vista, Va.
The slate includes a wide range of venues to best prepare his teams for the Capital Athletic Conference race on Nov. 1 in Fredericksburg, Va.
"Our schedule allows us to see competition from a lot of different regions outside the CAC as well as varying styles of courses," Davis said. "There is no preview race for the conference meet at Mary Washington this year, so we don't really know what to expect."
The season begins Aug. 30 at Mary Baldwin College in Staunton, Virginia, where both the men and women will run a 5k. A week later, both squads travel to St. Mary's City, Maryland, to compete at the Seahawk Invite hosted by league member St. Mary's College.
Southern Virginia will compete in its closest meet to Buena Vista on Sept. 13 when the Knights travel to Lexington for the John Tucker Invite hosted by Washington & Lee. The teams then head to Salem, Virginia on Sept. 20 for the Maroon Invitational hosted by Roanoke College.
The Knights will run at three other meets preceding the CAC Championship to gain further insight on the challenges the league race will present. On Oct. 4, Southern Virginia will run the Maryville College Invite before competing at the Shenandoah Open on Oct. 11. The Christopher Newport Open on Oct. 18 concludes the regular season meets before the CAC race on Nov. 1.
"The CAC doesn't have any returning national qualifiers this year, but there were a lot of young runners throughout the league who did very well last year," Davis said. "The league is wide open, so we have a chance to go in and claim the top spot."
