Cross Country Performs Well at Christopher Newport Invitational

By Wesley Evans

NEWPORT NEWS, Va.—Southern Virginia University cross country competed in the Christopher Newport University Invitational Saturday, Oct. 12, with strong performances from both the men's and women's teams.

Men's Race (8k)

The Knights faced off against two Capital Athletic Conference opponents in the race in foes Christopher Newport and Marymount. Georgia College and Gallaudet University rounded out the rest of the field. Despite the harsh weather conditions, the men performed well finishing in third place overall with 85 points.

"All of the men ran personal or season bests," said head coach Logan Davis. "That's a very impressive feat considering the rain and soggy course we were running on."

Junior Patrick Gonzalez led the way once again for Southern Virginia as he placed 10th out of 38 runners with a time of 27:44.9. Freshman Michael Ward was close behind as he entered the chute only 14 seconds later with a time of 27:58.8. Kevin Prince was the next Knight runner to finish, crossing the line only three places behind Ward and finishing 16th overall. His time was a season-best as he finished in 28:22.9. Junior Coulter Sims and senior Dan Fotheringham rounded out the men as they crossed the finish line with times of 33:32.4 and 37:01.6, respectively.

Christopher Newport ran away with the victory in its own invitational with an overall score of 27. Georgia College placed second with 35 points. Southern Virginia (85 points) edged out fellow CAC member Marymount (99 points) as well as Gallaudet (109 points).

Women's Race (5k)

The Southern Virginia University women's cross country team ran four participants in the meet and all competed with solid finishing times and placements.

Senior Kera Macfarlane-Neilson was the top finisher for the women and lone Knight runner to finish in the top 15. She placed 14th out of 26 runners and crossed the finish line with a time of 21:18.6. Freshman Becca Lords finished only two spots later as she placed 16th overall with a season- and personal-best time of 22:01.6. Katelyn Tonini (25:25.0) and Hayden Larman (28:18.7) finished 21st and 23rd, respectively, as they rounded out the Knights' lineup.

Christopher Newport earned the team victory with an overall score of 29.

The Southern Virginia men's and women's cross country teams are back in action this Saturday, Oct. 19, as they travel to Gettysburg, Pa., to compete in the Gettysburg Invitational.
