BUENA VISTA, Va.−Southern Virginia University men's cross country sophomore runner Patrick Gonzalez today was name USCAA Co-Runner of the Week after placing fourth overall at the Washington and Lee Invitational on Saturday, Sep. 8.
Gonzalez was Southern Virginia's top men's finisher at Washington and Lee after running the taxing 8K course in 29:43, while helping the Knights place sixth out of eight schools at the annual invitational.
In the 78-runner field, Gonzalez (Riverside, Calif.) was one of only four competitors to post an 8K time under 30 minutes as the sophomore shaved more than a half-minute off his time from the previous Friday's ODAC Preview meet, despite the fact that Washington and Lee's course is widely considered more difficult with its multiple steep climbs.
After recently returning from a two-year mission for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Argentina, Gonzalez (Riverside, Calif.) has been Southern Virginia's top finisher in both of his races this season.
"Patrick is an important member of our team," said second-year Head Coach Logan Davis. "More than just being our top runner, he brings a positive attitude, strong work ethic, and a competitive mentality to practice everyday."
