SALEM, Va. Behind four top-25 finishes, the Southern Virginia men's cross country team raced its way to a third place finish at the Maroon Invitational. BJ Awerkamp took an 11th place finish with a time of 30:38 on the 8k course. Awerkamp was followed by Kevin Prince, who was 36-seconds behind. Jordan Reid was the third SVU runner to finish with a time of 32:31.
Jesse Houchens rounded out the top-four finishers for the Knights as he came in 24th with a time of 32:43. The four combined to get Southern Virginia 63-points, and placed them 21-points behind second place UVA-Wise. Invitational hosts, Roanoke, overwhelmed the field by having none of its scoring runners finish lower than 13th, and walked away with the invitational win at 21-points.
Chris Werner came next for SVU, as he recorded a time of 34:25. Tyson Babbel and Casey Mudell rounded out the finishers for the Knights. SVU was able to finish in front of Hampden-Sydney College, a Roanoke Alumni team, Marymount University, Emory & Henry College, Bluefield State College, and Bluefield College.
The SVU team will return to action Oct. 9.
