SALEM, Va. The Southern Virginia Men's Cross Country team competed against several NCAA D.III teams at the Maroon Invitational. The team finished fourth of 6 teams, and placed well in the latter stages of the race to secure the strong finish for the team. Tyler Brown led the SVU runners, but was followed closely by BJ Awerkamp and Kevin Prince to push SVU into the fourth spot for the day.
"That finish by the guys is a great sign for the team," Head Coach Leslie McKinney said. "The schools we ran against have good strong programs and we competed well. I'm happy with the team focus we had. We finished three runners within three seconds of each other. That sort of timing will help us as we head to the national invitational."
A group of runners including Jason Fullmer, Jesse Houchens, Peter Rose, and Marlon Sheffield finished within 2 minutes of the first three and bolstered the performance for the men. The men accumulated 127 points, and showed well against the D.III teams.
"I'm excited for what we can become," said McKinney. "We don't have any standout runners, but we have a lot of solid runners, who can run together, and finish in a group to get us the points we'll need to get good team points."
The Knights run again Oct. 8 when they travel to run against Virginia State.
