NEW ORLEANS, La. — Southern Virginia University mid-distance runner Murray Bingham made program history, becoming the first to earn U.S. Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association Indoor All-American honors after an incredible season on the track.
"I am very proud of Murray and his accomplishments this year," said head coach Wyatt Warnick. "He is every bit deserving of this accolade. Murray competes. He got better and better throughout the year. He and Coach Chandler had a great race plan going into the NCAA Championship meet. I am confident he would have had a successful meet and outdoor season, as well. This honor is a first for our program and a big moment for us going forward. We hope to have many more of these accolades to come."
In his freshman season, the Sequim, Washington, native punched the program's first ticket to the NCAA Indoor Track & Field Championships after running a program-record 1:53.62 in the 800 meter run at the South Region Final Qualifier, placing Bingham 13th in Division III. In addition to setting the 800 meter program record, Bingham set one more individual program-record in the mile run (4:21.76) and was a member of three program-record setting relay teams in the 4x400 relay (3:29.11), 4x800 relay (8:12.41), and distance medley relay (10:32.13).
At the Capital Athletic Conference (CAC) Championships, Bingham was named the program's first (CAC) Indoor Track & Field Rookie of the Year after winning the 800 meter run at the CAC Championships, setting then a new program record and also a new meet record with a blistering time of 1:53.90. His performance earned him All-CAC First Team honors in the event. He also played a vital role in the distance medley team's victory at the CAC Championships with a winning time of 10:32.13 while setting a new program record.
Bingham garnishes regional and statewide recognition after receiving USTFCCCA Indoor South/Southeast All-Region honors in the 800 meter run, mile run, and the distance medley relay. He most recently was named Virginia Sports Information Directors (VaSID) Indoor Rookie of the Year and All-State First Team.
"Indoor season gave me a chance to thrive this past semester," said Bingham. "Our team exhibits the University's mission to Gather, Lift, and Launch. The support, love, and synergy within our team was a catalyst to my success as an individual. Southern Virginia's culture embraces its student-athletes and helped me feel a part of not just the track team but the University as a whole. Being from the west coast, I am grateful to come out to the east coast and have an incredible experience. I want to thank my coaches, who taught us how to become great athletes and individuals. I am thankful for receiving the award of All-American and am honored to be apart of such an incredible institution."
