NEWPORT NEWS, Va. — The Southern Virginia University men's and women's track and field programs finished their single day competition at the Captains Classic.
The women's team was anchored by the throws with six different athletes finishing top-eight. Mesi Havea led the way with a victory in the hammer throw with a mark of 45.92m to go along with a third-place finish in the discus and a sixth-place in the shot put.
Baylee Mulitalo finished second in both the shot put (12.93m) and hammer throw (43.39m) while Elle Warnick collected a second-place finish in the javelin with a throw of 34.83m. Ella Burrows added a third-place finish in the javelin (28.41m) with a fifth in the shot put and seventh in the hammer. Kanani Lasike finished fifth in the discus while Madeleine Maher placed fourth and seventh in the javelin and shot put.
In the women's jumps, Abigail Kinoshita recorded her first win of the outdoor season in the triple jump with a mark of 10.66m and later finished second in the long jump. Kailee Rucker placed sixth in the long jump while Lauren Janda added a fifth-place finish in the triple jump.
On the track, Jill Westman was the only Knight to secure a top-place finish as she recorded third overall in the 5000m with a time of 19:21.29.
On the men's team, Daniel de la Cruz led the Knights with an individual victory in the 400m hurdles with a time of 55.66. Derek Blasko finished second in the javelin (52.88) and third in the shot put (14.58m) while freshman distance runner Hunter Lund ran a personal best 15:50.56 in the 5000m run finishing fifth.
Southern Virginia will now prepare for the CAC Outdoor Championships Friday, May 3.
