LEXINGTON, Va. — The Southern Virginia University track and field teams continued to break school records as they concluded the second day at the 2019 Winter Relays hosted at the Virginia Military Institute.
On the women's team, Elora Smith led the mid-distance squad with a time of 2:39.62 in the 800m finishing second in her heat. Kanani Lasike threw a personal best in the weight throw with a mark of 12.99m winning her flight and placing 18th overall.
Bethany Maggert just missed the school record in the long jump with a mark of 4.66m. In the sprints, Abigail Kinoshita won her section in the 200m, recording a time of 29.98.
On the men's team, Derek Blasko highlighted the Knight's top performance with a sixth-place finish in the shot put with a throw of 15.03m. Freshman Skylar Johnson set a new school record in the long jump with a jump of 5.74m finishing 29th overall. Daniel de la Cruz fell just shy of the school record in the 200m with a time of 23.45.
"This was a good competition with large schools from Division I, II and III backgrounds," said head coach Wyatt Warnick. "This meet gives us experience in a big meet environment that will help us prepare for the CAC Championships next week. We will take what we learned and prepare and come back with our best performances."
The Capital Athletic Conference Championships begin Friday, Feb. 15 at Newport News, Virginia.
