ROANOKE, Va. – The Southern Virginia University track & field team had a strong showing over the weekend as they traveled to Roanoke College to participate in the Finn Pincus Invitational. The Knights set several personal and program bests.
The men's distance medley relay team comprised of Michael Myers, Daniel de la Cruz, Nelson Rader, and Colter May finished in third place with a time of 10:56.13. Their performance currently stands in first among all other teams in the Capital Athletic Conference.
Derek Blasko had another fantastic performance on Saturday, winning the shot put event on his final attempt with a throw of 14.35m.
"To be honest, I wasn't throwing well during the competition," he commented. "On my last one, I was able to get out of my head and throw like I'd practiced."
With the conference championship meet coming on February 17, Blasko has set himself up to be one of the favorites to take home the shot put crown.
In the women's mile, freshman Clarissa Barton took home third place for the Knights with a time of 5:29.22. Her tough and consistent effort provided a new school record, breaking the previous mark by over 10 seconds.
First-year head coach Elizabeth Wilson continues to be excited about the progress of the team. "This weekend was fun for us," she remarked. "Our team is becoming familiar with the indoor season, and is finding a groove of improving as we look forward to the CAC Championships in 3 weeks."
The Knights return to action at the VMI Winter Relays in nearby Lexington, Va. on February 9 & 10.
