Motlojoa and Blonquist to Make Program's First Apperance at 2019 ITA Cup

BUENA VISTA, Va. — Southern Virginia's men's tennis duo of Kukutla Motlojoa and Daniel Blonquist made program history becoming the first athletes to qualify for the 2019 ITA Cup.

Motlojoa and Blonquist earned their ticket to the 2019 ITA Cup after shining at the ITA Regional Championships in doubles Oct. 4-5. The pair started in the championship draw in doubles, where they earned a first-round bye. In the second round, the duo defeated their opponent from Lebanon Valley College 8-0 to advance to the third round the following day.

In the third round, the No. 22 nationally ranked pair took down Mary Washington 8-1 to advance to the quarterfinals. In the quarters, Motlojoa and Blonquist forced a tiebreaker to come out on top 8-7(1) moving to the semifinals.

Concluding play at the ITA Regionals, the Motlojoa and Blonquist received the at-large selection to the 2019 ITA Cup. The invite is given to player(s) from the pool of regional semifinalists from any ITA Regional Championship within that division, who has the highest national ranking from the previous year's rankings.

Each division represented will feature between eight and sixteen singles players and eight to sixteen doubles teams competing in their respective draws.

Motlojoa and Blonquist begin play tomorrow, Oct. 17 at the Rome Tennis Center on the campus of Berry College in Rome, Georgia, with a start time of 4:15 p.m. against James Wei and Varun Shanker of Caltech.
