Fredericksburg, Va. — The Southern Virginia University men's tennis finished play at the ITA South regional tennis tournament on Saturday with multiple wins in the different divisions.
Kukutla Motlojoa and Daniel Blonquist had the most impressive showing of the day. The pair of Knights took out their first opponents from Mary Washington 8-1 in the championship doubles draw, advancing them to the quarterfinals.
In the quarters, Motlojoa and Blonquist had a long, tough match and forced a tiebreaker. The nationally-ranked duo played some of their best tennis in the breaker and was able to come out on top 8-7(1).
Dias and Monson, the other team in the championship doubles draw fought hard but weren't able to overcome the No. 1 duo from Salisbury falling 8-6.
In championship singles, both Motlojoa and Dias fell in their first matches of the day to opponents from Johns Hopkins University, Motlojoa 6-4, 6-2, and Dias 6-3, 7-6.
In the A flight of doubles, Ben Spencer and Ethan Sherwood won both of their matches on the day crowning themselves champions of their draw. The duo defeated teams from Haverford and Franklin and Marshall 8-5 and 8-6.
Ethan Sherwood also won his singles flight, winning matches against Haverford and St. Marys 6-4, 6-3, and 6-3, 6-4.
The last wins of the day for the Knights came as the doubles pair of Andrew Blonquist and Tanner Bassett picked up a win in the doubles back-draw 8-4. Senior Ben Spencer was able to take down his man from Washington & Lee 1-6, 6-1, 10-3.
The Knights will return to action next Saturday, Oct. 12 as they will take on York College of Pennsylvania, and Randolph College in a double-header match.
