LYNCHBURG, Va. — The Southern Virginia University Men's tennis team (3-0) earned two victories on Saturday as they defeated the Averett University Cougars (1-1) and the Randolph College Wildcats (0-2).
The Knights had a tough battle with Averett, but managed to take a 6-3 victory. Only a few hours later, in the second match of their double header, Southern Virginia rolled to a 9-0 victory over Randolph.
The Knights came out sluggish in doubles against Averett, but some resilient play helped them take two of the three doubles points.
In singles play against the Cougars, the Knights No's. 1, 2, and 3 players, Paul Monson, Kukutla Motlojoa, and Daniel Blonquist, came out firing as they quickly knocked off their opponents, dropping only 7 games in the process. At the No. 5 singles flight, Andrew Blonquist also added a solid win taking down his opponent in straight sets 6-4, 6-3. The Knights fought hard but came up empty at the No. 4 and No. 6 singles positions.
In addition, Southern Virginia freshman Cody Akin and Adam Kelly made their doubles debut, taking down their opponents 8-1. This match helped the Knights jump up on the wildcats 3-0 going into the singles portion of play.
In singles, freshman Will Stoddard also made his debut for the Knights, winning his match 6-0, 6-0 helping complete the 9-0 sweep.
The match against Averett was a big win for the Knights as they earned some revenge from their loss at the hands of the Cougars last year.
The Knights will resume play in the spring as they're set to take on John Hopkin's University. The match is scheduled for the 23rd of February at 12 p.m.
