BUENA VISTA, Va. — The Southern Virginia University men's tennis team (1-0) opened their season in dominating fashion defeating the defending ECAC champions, Pfeiffer University (0-1), 8-1 on Friday afternoon.
The No. 2 doubles team consisting of Andrew Blonquist and Paul Monson were the first to finish the doubles portion of the match as they dispatched their opponents 8-1. The No. 1 and No. 3 doubles teams quickly followed as they both chipped in impressive 8-3 and 8-5 victories respectively.
In singles action, the newest addition to the Knights roster, Kukutla Motlojoa, was the first to finish his match. Kukutla or KK as he's been nicknamed, won with little resistance, defeating his opponent 6-3, 6-0 at the No. 2 singles flight. Freshman Daniel Blonquist was the next to finish as he clinched the match for the Knights, defeating his opponent 6-2, 6-0 at the No. 3 position.
Sophomore Paul Monson overcame some difficulties in his match to add another point to the Knights total, as he won at the No. 1 position 6-0, 5-7, (10-5). At the 4, 5, and 6 singles positions, the Knights battled hard and were able to take 2 of the 3 matches.
Head Coach Tom Snelson said, "I'm pleased with how well we played against a very good team. We came out strong in doubles to take control of the match. We've been focusing on that all fall, and I'm happy with our players execution."
The Knights will return to action Saturday October 6th as they face off against Averett University and Randolph College in a double header match. The match against Averett is scheduled to begin at 9:00 a.m., while the match against Randolph will begin later in the afternoon at 2:00 p.m.
