BLUEFIELD, Va.— Parker Monson and Tanner Heyland picked up the only victory for the Southern Virginia University men's tennis team as it fell, 8-1, to Bluefield College Monday afternoon at The City Courts in Bluefield, Virginia.
The Rams got an early 2-1 lead over the Knights in doubles play. Dallin Evans and Kjell Henness fell, 8-2. Brennan Alford and Cort Cox were defeated by an 8-0 score. No. 3 doubles duo, Parker Monson and Tanner Heyland defeated Luke Lilly and Hassan Muzaffer by an 8-6 score.
The Knights were swept in singles play. Dallin Evans fell by a 6-0, 6-2 score. Brennan Alford was topped by a 6-0, 6-1 count. Cort Cox was defeated, 6-0, 6-0. Kjell Henness battled against Bluefield's Chaz Stonestreet. Henness won the first set 6-7 (7-4), then lost the second by a 6-4 count. The No. 4 singles players faced off in a super tiebreaker with Stonestreet walking away with a 10-0 (1-0) victory.
Parker Monson competed well with his opponent, Luke Lilly. Monson lost his first set 6-4 but bounced back for a 2-6 victory leading to a second super tiebreaker loss of the day, 10-6 (1-0). Tanner Heyland was defeated, by a 6-1, 7-5 count, in the No. 6 singles spot.
The Knights will head to Frostburg State University for its last match of the season. The match is scheduled for Thursday at 4pm at The Harold J. Cordts Physical Education Center in Frostburg, Maryland.
