NEWPORT NEWS, Va.—Four Southern Virginia University tennis scholar-athletes were named to the 2013 non-United States Collegiate Athletic Association Fall Sport All-Academic Team as announced by the organization Wednesday morning in Newport News, Va.
The sport of men's and women's tennis is not presently sponsored by the USCAA, which is why the organization designates the honorees as non-USCAA All-Academic.
Scholar-athletes earn All-Academic honors by being an upperclassman who has earned a cumulative GPA of 3.5 or higher over the course of his/her academic career. The nominees were selected by way of unofficial transcripts submitted from the Spring 2013 semester.
Ravisankar and Brown were named to the team for the first time in addition to Blocher, who received the award for a second year in a row. Laurence received the award for the first time on the women's side.
A Chennai, India native, Ravisankar finished his 2013 spring season with a singles record of 4-6 and doubles record of 3-7. An undecided major, he holds a 3.5 GPA while pursuing his bachelor's degree.
Brown has a singles record of 3-6 and a doubles record of 2-8 between the spring and fall 2013 seasons. A native of Kaysville, Utah, he has a 3.51 GPA majoring in business management and leadership and double minoring in English and creative writing.
A native of Rockwood, Tenn., Blocher finished the 2013 season with an 8-8 singles record and a 6-8 doubles record. He also received 2013 CoSIDA Academic All-America honors maintaining a 3.83 GPA while pursuing a bachelor's degree in computer science and a minor in philosophy.
Laurence finished her first season with the Knights with a 4-6 singles record and a 0-3 doubles record. The Bountiful, Utah, native holds a 3.81 GPA majoring in business management and leadership with a minor in music.
Men's and women's tennis will play their first home matches on their new courts at 1 p.m. and 10:30 a.m., respectively, on March 1 at The Fields in Buena Vista, Va.
