Knights Down Ferrum 7-2, Record Program First

FERRUM, Va. — The Southern Virginia University men's tennis team avenged an early-season loss to NCAA Division III Bridgewater College on Saturday as the Knights defeated the Panthers 7-2 for the first time in the program's five year history.

The match was part of a doubleheader with Southern Virginia women's tennis, which swept Bridgewater 9-0.

The Knights got off to a strong start against Ferrum sweeping all three doubles matches from the Panthers, after winning only one of three back in September.

Southern Virginia's top duo of Shaolin Chandam and Stefan Vlasek defeated Ferrum's top doubles team 8-5.

Phillip Whiteley and Tim Birch paired for an 8-4 win at No. 2 doubles while Adam Williford and Brenann Alford were 8-3 winners at No. 3 doubles.

After controlling doubles play, Southern Virginia went on to take four of six doubles matches to reach the final score.

Chandam (No. 1), Vlasek (No. 3) and Alford (No. 6) each won their singles match in straight sets to go 2-0 for the afternoon.

Williford won the only split-set match of the day in No. 4 doubles 4-6, 6-2, 11-9 and also finished the day with two wins.

With Saturday's win, Southern Virginia has now won five of its last six games dating back to Oct. 1, 2010.

Men's tennis will now face Bridgewater College on Tuesday, Mar. 22 at 3:30 p.m. Tuesday's match will be the second straight doubleheader with women's tennis.
