LYNCHBURG, Va. - The Southern Virginia University men's tennis team overwhelmed Randolph College, 8-1, to record the first team win of the spring season, and moved to 3-3 for the year.
Things started well for the Knights as they swept the opening doubles matches from the Wildcats. Shaolin Chandam and Stefan Vlassek earned an 8-2 win over their opponents to get the visitors started. An epic 9-7 match finally broke to the duo of Phillip Whiteley and Timothy Birch in the second match. Adam Williford and Brennan Alford then made quick work of the #3 doubles team from Randolph.
The singles matches started with a similar pattern, as the Knights would face tough challenges in the first set of matches, and then sweep past the Wildcats in the second set. Chandam squeaked past the Wildcat's number one player with a 7-5 first set win, but then quickly dispatched his opponent with a 6-0 win. Whiteley had a 6-4 first set win followed by a 6-0 rout.
The number three singles match was the one of the most exciting matches of the day, as Birch rebounded from a 4-6 first set loss to win 6-0 in the second set. The tie-breaker was a back-and-forth affair, with Birch finally pulling out the 11-9 win. Vlassek would then make quick work of his opponent at 6-2, 6-2. Alford had the most problems with his match, as he lost his first set 4-6, before rebounding for a 6-2 win. In the tie-breaker, Alford could not get the points for the win, and fell 6-10.
Williford would finish off the wildcats, as he won 7-5 in the first set, and then took the second set, 7-5, to give the Knights the 8-1 win to start the spring off right. SVU will return to the courts Mar. 8 when the team travels to take on Hood. Matches will start at 3:30 pm.
