Men's Tennis Wins Season Opener

Southern Virginia University men's tennis team won its opening match of the 2010-11 season Monday afternoon, defeating Central Virginia Community College 6-3.

Southern Virginia's victory was highlighted by freshmen Timothy Birch and Aaron Hiatt, who both recorded wins in the first singles matches of their respective collegiate careers.

Sophomore and team co-captain, Adam Williford, also played well in the season opener, winning No. 1 singles for the Knights as Coach Tony Caputo opted to rest his other co-captain and usual lead singles player, junior Phillip Whiteley. Whiteley recorded a singles win in the sixth spot by default.

Co-captians, Whiteley and Williford, teamed up in the number one doubles match to defeat CVCC's lead doubles team, 8-5. Southern Virginia's Brennan Alford and Parker Monson also recorded a doubles win for the Knights by default.

Men's tennis plays again Sept. 18 at Penn State-Harriburg. The match is scheduled to begin at noon.
