BUENA VISTA, Va. — The Southern Virginia University men's soccer team picked up its first win of the season, defeating Regent University 2-0.
The Knights (1-8) were able to break out of a slow first half, scoring in the 38th minute on a corner kick from Christian Rice finding Matt Diede for the header. The Knights led the Royals 1-0 going into the half.
Southern Virginia extended its lead in the second half when Diede scored his second goal of the game on a penalty kick, making the score 2-0.
The game was a tough, hard-fought matchup that included 35 total fouls. The Knights outshot the Royals in shots (21 to 17) and corner kicks (7 to 6). Jacob Solis is credited with the win as he collected nine saves to complete the shutout.
The Knights start conference play next as they will host St. Mary's (Md.) on Saturday, Sept. 29 at Knight Stadium at 7:30 p.m.
