BUENA VISTA, Va. — On senior night, the Southern Virginia University men's soccer team was unable to slow the attack from St. Mary's College (Md.) on Saturday night, dropping the game 6-1.
After an uneventful first 12 minutes of the game, the Seagulls' (9-5, 5-1 CAC) attack got going, scoring four goals over a span of 10 minutes, including one off of a penalty kick and another from a corner. The Seagulls held their 4-0 lead over the Knights (4-11, 1-5 CAC) until halftime.
Southern Virginia showed signs of a comeback at the beginning of the second period, with sophomore Nathan Allen putting a ball in the back of the net after a corner kick bounced around in the box. It was Allen's second goal of the year, and he ended up taking five of the Knights' six shots in the match. St. Mary's was able to tack on two more goals before the final whistle, scoring in the 79th and 82nd minutes.
The Seagulls finished the match with six corner kicks, doubling the Knights total of three. Southern Virginia was also shown three yellow cards.
Southern Virginia continues their campaign on Wednesday as Marymount University travels to Buena Vista. The match will start at 7:00 p.m. Knights Stadium, and will be broadcasted live.
