BUENA VISTA, Va. — The Southern Virginia men's soccer team dropped their game on Wednesday to Roanoke College by a score of 8-1.

The Maroons (5-2-1) opened the game with a goal in the third minute and ended up scoring five more in the first half, including two headers. Roanoke outshot the Knights (3-5) in the first period 19-1.

It was a slow start to the second half until the Maroons put two in the back of the net to extend their lead to 8-0. The Knights scored their lone goal in the 81st minute when freshman Nathan Maloney rose up to head in a Mathew Jones corner. The play was Maloney's first goal of the year, as well as Jones' first assist on the season.

The Knights had three other shots with seniors Marrott Weekes and Gregg Allen putting theirs on frame, while junior Christian Rice sent one wide.

Colin Flynn was in goal again for Southern Virginia, taking the loss but coming up with eight saves over the course of the game.

The Knights will play their first Capital Athletic Conference match on Saturday as Salisbury University comes to town. Kickoff is scheduled for 8:00 p.m. at Knight Stadium.
