Patiño Announces 2014 Men’s Soccer Slate

BUENA VISTA, Va.—Heading into his first season as head coach of the Southern Virginia University men's soccer program, Josh Patiño announced the 2014 men's soccer schedule Tuesday afternoon in Buena Vista, Va.

"It's a complete and very competitive schedule," Patiño said. "It provides teams from a variety of conferences such as the Old Dominion Athletic Conference, USA South Conference and the Capital Athletic Conference. Three of the teams we play from the ODAC finished in the top five of their conference last season."

The 2014 schedule includes 20 games, including 2013 NCAA Sweet 16 competitors and CAC foes No. 7 York College and No. 14 Salisbury University. Salisbury went undefeated and allowed only two goals during conference play.

"It's exciting to have 20 games this season," said Patiño. "This is what this sport is all about - competing at the highest level. We will have several opportunities to show what we're capable of and what we can accomplish as a team."

Salisbury went on to graduate six seniors, but will have 24 returning players. York graduated eight players, but will return 22 players from last year's team.

"I believe our returning players will rise to the occasion and step up to lead the team already having a year in the CAC under their belt," said Patiño. "I'm also confident in our 2014 recruiting class to help us reach the conference playoffs."

The Knights start the season with nine non-conference games to prepare for their nine conference match-ups starting with Salisbury in late September. The Knights will face two more non-conference teams and close the season with six conference contests, including traveling to CAC foe Marymount University as they look to top the Saints for a second straight year.

Southern Virginia closes the 2014 crusade Oct. 29 at home against Frostburg State.
