BUENA VISTA Va.—Hosting its first Capital Athletic Conference opponent, the Southern Virginia University men's soccer team fell to visiting Christopher Newport University by a 6-0 score Wednesday night at The Fields in Buena Vista, Va.

With the defeat, the Knights fall to 0-11-1 for the year while the Captains improve to 7-4-1.

"We felt we were emotionally prepared to play this game but came out flat from the start," said Southern Virginia Director of Soccer Matt Grawrock. "Their first goal happened so quickly it took us off guard and we never were the same. Moving forward we'll work on keeping an even keel and shaking it off when something doesn't go as planned."

Christopher Newport's Jalon Brown scored just 31 seconds into the game off a cross from Caleb Lewis to give the Captains a quick 1-0 advantage. Five minutes later at the 5:54 mark the duo teamed up again to score as Brown took Lewis' pass at the top of the box and snuck it in for a 2-0 CNU lead.

The Captains' Jimmy Grace and Ryan Balfour each scored two goals for Christopher Newport to finish the game and lift the Captains to the 6-0 win.

Freshmen Carlos Munoz and Dennis Bronson each earned a shot on goal for the Knights while senior Kyle Tyree had another shot attempt.

Southern Virginia goalie Scott Zaring achieved 14 saves on the night playing a complete game.

The Knights next compete Saturday at home against CAC opponent Salisbury. Kickoff is scheduled for noon.
