Written by Daniel Whitehead

BUENA VISTA, Va.—As Southern Virginia University Athletics gears up for the 2013-14 athletics season, we are taking a look back at the top five contests from last year.

It is an exciting time for Southern Virginia as the Knights prepare for their first season of competition in the Capital Athletic Conference and second year as provisional NCAA Division III members.

Each week leading up to fall competition, we will highlight one significant game from this past season to build excitement for another successful campaign for the Knights.

No. 4 — Men's Soccer Defeats Marymount in Overtime for Third Straight Win

Oct. 3, 2012Facing future Capital Athletic Conference foe Marymount, the Southern Virginia University men's soccer team defeated the Saints by a 2-1 score in the 97th minute by senior forward Ryan Foster.

The win was the third consecutive victory for the squad en route to an eventual five-game winning streak to help the team to a second straight winning season (10-7), the most program wins in a season since the 2003 team (13-10).

With the game tied at one apiece after regulation, Foster (Custer, S.D.) scored the game-winning goal at the 96:55 mark on a rebound shot that Marymount goalie had deflected from Adam Freeman's (Marion, Va.) shot attempt.

"Momentum games are always important, and to win that game the way we did was huge," said coach Matt Grawrock. "The guys had mentioned early on that they could weather the storm from Marymount's attack, and they just kept getting stronger as the game progressed. As we headed to overtime, our guys were thriving on the environment and the stage that had been set, and it felt like we had a great chance to win.

"It was an important game because it helped give the team a look at what conference play was going to be like, and what it was going to take to be successful at the D-III level."

Down 1-0 after a Marymount score midway through the first half, Freeman tied it up by scoring his sixth goal of the season on a fast break shot into the right side of the net at the 53:14 mark.

The Knights were able to keep the Saints scoreless over the last 70 minutes of the game to preserve the win.

The 2012-13 team was strong off the pitch, as well, with four Knights being named USCAA All-Americans and five achieving all-academic honors.

Foster now serves as Southern Virginia's strength and conditioning coach for all teams at the university.
