Late Comeback Fall Short at Bridgewater for Men's Soccer

Written by Chris Pendleton

BRIDGEWATER, Va.—The Southern Virginia University men's soccer team suffered its first loss of the season on Wednesday at Bridgewater College falling 2-1 to the Eagles from Old Dominion Athletic Conference.

After stormy weather delayed the game's start time by more than an hour, the match remained scoreless until the 52nd minute when Bridgewater (1-1) capitalized on a throw-in opportunity near Southern Virginia's goal. Senior Kevin Gorman tracked down the Eagle's throw in and found freshman teammate Logan McGlynn streaking in front of Southern Virginia's net, who punched in his first collegiate goal giving Bridgewater at 1-0 lead.

Bridgewater added its second and final goal 15 minutes later as the Knights were playing a man down after Adam Freeman (Marion, Va.) left the game with his second yellow card in the 54th minute.

The Knights made a late comeback charge scoring in the 82nd minute when freshman Zac McCulloch (Draper, Utah) took a pass from junior Nathanile Sellis (Taylorsville, Utah) and headed it in for Southern Virginia's first score and his second goal of the young season. Both of McCulloch's goals this season have been headers assisted by Sellis.

Southern Virginia's disadvantage proved too much to overcome, however, as the Knights could not add the equalizing goal before time expired, despite Kyle Tyree (Williamsburg, Va.) attempt that went off the post with only 45 seconds left.

The Knights finished with a 7-6 advantage for shots on goal.

"I was really proud of how hard our guys played tonight and the way we continued to fight despite difficult circumstances," said Head Coach Tony Caputo. "We made a gutsy comeback despite having only 10 guys on the field and nearly tied the game there at the end. We'll learn from this and continue to improve going forward."

Men's soccer (1-1) has another tough test on Saturday, Sept. 8, when the Knights travel to Emory & Henry College (1-2)—their second consecutive ODAC opponent—for a match at 2 p.m.

Southern Virginia lost 2-0 at home to Emory & Henry during their last meeting on Sept. 29, 2011.
