Smith Selected to VaSID All-State Second Team

Written by Chris Pendleton

BUENA VISTA, Va.—Josh Smith of the Southern Virginia University men's soccer team today was selected as a forward on the 2011 VaSID Men's Soccer College Division All-State Second Team as voted on by the Virginia Sports Information Directors.

Smith, a freshman from Newburgh, Indiana, had an outstanding inaugural collegiate season at Southern Virginia tallying 20 total points while leading the Knights in assists (6). The first-year forward also netted seven goals during his freshman campaign, the third-most goals on Southern Virginia's team.

One of twelve freshmen on this fall's men's soccer roster, Smith helped the Knights to a 9-6-2 record—the most single-season wins by any Southern Virginia soccer team since 2003.

"Josh is an extremely talented player who really understands the game," said Head Coach Tony Caputo of Smith. "He has enough speed and skill to try and take over a game by himself, but he always chose to play unselfishly and elevate the play of everyone else around him."

Smith will embark upon a two-year mission for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints this spring and plans to return to Southern Virginia's men's soccer team in 2014.

VaSID's College Division consists of 27 non-NCAA Division I institutions across the state of Virginia.
