Knights Open Season With Win

BUENA VISTA, Va. A second half Seth Hartman goal gave the Southern Virginia Men's Soccer team a win in the season opener over Warren Wilson. The Knights opened the season at home in front of a strong fan section, and came away victorious in head coach Jedd Zaring's first game.

SVU (1-0) had an overwhelming advantage in the shots category, as they recorded 18-shots to 9 for the Owls. Warren Wilson (0-1), however, made up for the lack of shots, with a better shots on goal average, as four of their shots called for saves from the SVU keepers.

The game was a tense affair with both teams looking for the opening goal in the first half. SVU had a majority of the possession, but could not find the back of the net. Both teams put the others' goalkeeper under pressure, and SVU keeper, Ben May, was called on for three saves in the first 45-minutes.

The game was contentious throughout, as the teams combined for 29 fouls. The second half saw the visitors take possession away from the Knights, and second-half keeper Richard Crist needed quick thinking to keep the ball out of the net.

A Warren Wilson foul close to goal gave the Knights a chance for the score. Chris Teerlink set up for the shot, but then sent a pass through to Hartman, who it a far post shot past the keeper's hands for the eventual winner.

The breakthrough had been threatening all afternoon, and SVU was not left to regret missed chances. Jason Greene, had a break away miss, before Hartman made the Owls pay for sloppy defending.

The Knights start the season with a win for the first time since the 2007 season. Up next for VU will be a trip to play Patrick Henry, in the first game of a home-and-home series. Kickoff for the game is 4:00.
