PURCELLEVILLE, Va. The Southern Virginia University Men's Soccer team started the 2009 season on the right note as they traveled to play at Patrick Henry College and came away with a 3-1 win.
The Knights played a confident game and were able to overwhelm
the Sentinels all game. The goal scoring started early for SVU as
Chris Teerlink was able to run on to a through ball from David Haws
and beat the keeper after twenty minutes. The Knights did not have
to wait long for the second tally, as Dax Farnsworth was able to
meet a flicked ball from Teerlink and volley the Knights into the
2-0 lead at the 22:34 mark of the first half.
The Knights were on cruise control, and could have scored
several more, but were unable to penetrate the Sentinel defense for
the next twenty minutes. In between, PHC was able to get back into
the game when at the 39:00 mark of the first half; a penalty kick
was called against the Knights. Mike Wilson was unable to keep the
strike out, and the game became tighter than SVU was hoping
for.
Farnsworth struck again 43:30 into the first after he scooped up
a rebound from a David Haws shot. The second goal for Farnsworth
would prove to be the last of the game as neither side could put
the ball in the goal in the second half.
"This was a great first step for us," said Head Coach Tom
Longenecker. "To get this first win means a lot, and hopefully it
establishes the pattern for the team to follow this year. It's a
long season, but starting out with a win can really help the focus
of the team."
The Knights will be in action again Tuesday, September 1, as they unveil the new Southern Virginia Soccer Field in a home match against Bridgewater. Game time is set for 5:00.
