Spring Senior Spotlight: Men's Lacrosse

BUENA VISTA, Va. — The Southern Virginia University men's lacrosse team graduates four seniors who have been critical in the program's continuous uprising while establishing a team dynamic that will continue to be passed on for future seasons.  

"These seniors are leaders on statistically the best team in SVU history," said head coach Jason Lamb. "All four of these seniors have been with the university for all four years which led to the stability and growth of our team. Finishing with a 7-1 record was the best start in program history - many first for this senior class."

In just eight games, the Knights netted an impressive 148 goals. At the same time, the defense stood tall, shutting down the opposition allowing the team to outscore their opponents 148-91. As leaders on offense and defense, the seniors helped guide the men's lacrosse team in becoming nationally ranked in multiple statistical categories, including:

This season, Shawn Lamb switched from his usual position of an attackman to play defensive midfield for the squad. As a defensive midfielder, Lamb led the team in ground balls with 39 while forcing 14 turnovers and adding 15 points (8g, 7a). As an attackman, Lamb earned CAC Rookie of the Year in 2017, followed by two consecutive years of earning All-CAC honors in his 2018 and 2019 campaign. In his sophomore campaign, Lamb led the CAC in total points scored in the form of 46 goals and 41 assists which credited him earning CAC Player of the Week twice. The Buena Vista local received a VaSID All-State Second Team selection and earned the program's first IMLCA All-Region Honorable Mention. He scored a career-high six goals in four different outings throughout his career while dishing out a career-high eight assists in the Knights 18-6 victory over Cazenovia in 2018. Lamb currently sits as the all-time points leader at Southern Virginia with 250 in the form of 142 goals and 108 assists. Lamb is currently a business major while minoring in psychology and will work for the Premier Lacrosse League in the summer before returning to campus as a fifth year senior. 

Isaac DeGarlais wrapped up his 2020 campaign, scoring 11 goals and six assists in just eight games. In his four years DeGarlais appeared in 58 games recording 46 total points in the form of 29 goals and 17 assists while bringing in 36 ground balls and causing eight turnovers. The West Haven, Utah native scored a career-high three goals in the 21-8 victory over the United States Merchant Marine Academy in 2020 while dishing out a career high four assists in the Knights victory over Ferrum his sophomore year. DeGarlais is currently pursuing a degree in business and plans to return to Southern Virginia as a fifth year senior. 

Kyle Fujikawa concluded his final season recording  nine ground balls and seven caused turnovers in the shortened season. During his time with the squad, Fujikawa played in 55 games while starting 37, amassing 58 ground balls and causing 35 turnovers. In his senior outing, the Centerville, Utah native recorded a career-high four caused turnovers in the Knights 21-8 victory over USMMA while recording a career-high four turnovers in the 14-9 victory over Wesley in 2017. Fujikawa will graduate with a degree in business following the completion of two courses in the summer before continuing his work as a salesman for Protonix Controls. 

Jacob Lamb joined the program in 2013 and served a mission for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints in Mongolia before returning to the squad in 2017. Lamb sealed his final season starting all eight games while bringing in eight ground balls and forcing six turnovers. In his career, Lamb brought in 103 ground balls and forced 41 turnovers as both a close defender and a defensive midfielder while going 60-for-157 at the faceoff x. The Buena Vista local, recorded a career-high six ground balls against York College in 2019 while recording a career-high four caused turnovers against St. Mary' that same year. Lamb is pursuing a degree in both business and Pre-Med and will take the MCAT in the fall, hoping to enroll in medical school in the fall of 2021. Lamb will return to campus as a full time student taking Pre-Med classes while also returning to the field as a fifth year senior.
