BUENA VISTA, Va. — The Southern Virginia University men's lacrosse team overcame a slow start Saturday afternoon to defeat Carthage by the score of 25-16.
The Knights (4-5) trailed the Red Men (6-2) 3-0 in the first quarter. With the score, 4-1 Southern Virginia went on a 4-0 run to take their first lead of the game at 5-4. After one more Red Men goal, the Knights would not look back leading 7-5 at the quarter break.
In the second quarter, the Knights increased their lead outscoring the Red Men 9-3 to take a 16-8 lead at the half.
Southern Virginia's strong play continued into the third as the defense held Carthage to just one goal to take a 22-9 lead heading into the final quarter.
The fourth quarter was the only quarter the Red Men outplayed the Knights scoring seven goals and limiting the Knights' offense to three goals, giving the Knights the 25-16 win.
Zach Danneman scored seven goals for his second straight game along with two assists while Shawn Lamb added six goals to go along with his three assists. Chandler Wescott recorded a game-high five assists and tallied three goals in the victory.
Caleb Brodie came in for the Knights to earn the win at goal collecting eight saves.
The Knights host Hendrix Tuesday, Mar. 19 at 7:00 p.m. at the Knight Stadium.
