WASHINGTON, D.C. — The Southern Virginia University men's lacrosse team won its season-opener Wednesday afternoon against Catholic University, topping the Cardinals 20-14.
The Knights (1-0) started with the game's first two goals from Chandler Wescott and Zach Danneman. The Cardinals (0-1) responded two of their own goals tying the game at 2-2. After each team would exchange one more goal, the Knights scored three straight goals leading 6-3 after the first.
In the second quarter, Southern Virginia extended their lead at the half after outscoring the Cardinals 8-2, now leading 14-5 at the half.
The second half of play favored the Cardinals as they outscored the Knights 4-3 in the third quarter and 5-3 in the fourth but the Southern Virginia first-half lead was too much for Catholic University to overcome falling 20-14.
The Knights were led by Danneman who scored seven goals, an assist, and three groundballs. Shawn Lamb scored four goals and tied a game-high two assists. Other Knights to scored were Wescott with three, Tennison Schmidt and Ty Veres with two, and Payton Kimber and Brady Cook with one apiece. Veres also led the Knights in ground balls with seven.
Ian Arave recorded 17 saves in his first win in goal of the season.
Southern Virginia will host Pfeiffer University in their home-opener Saturday, Feb. 16 at 11:00 a.m. at Knight Stadium.
