Schmidt with Six Goals in Season-Opening Men's Lacrosse Win

BUENA VISTA, VA. — The Southern Virginia University men's lacrosse team won its season opener Wednesday afternoon against Ferrum College, topping the Panthers 20-12 in Knight Stadium.

The Knights (1-0) got off to a slow start, allowing three goals in just over four minutes. Just seconds after the Panthers' (0-2) third goal, sophomore attack Shawn Lamb put the Knights on the board in the only home goal of the period.

By the time the end of the first half rolled around, the Knights completed a 7-3 run to take an 8-7 lead to intermission and never trailed in the second half. Twelve second-half goals and better second-half defense led to a final score of 20-12. The last time the Knights scored 20 or more points was Apr. 25, 2015 against Lees-McRae (W, 23-17).

In his collegiate debut, freshman Tennison Schmidt buried six goals into the back of the net and assisted two other scores. Seth Garff also played in his first collegiate match, scoring four goals.

2017 CAC Rookie of the Year Shawn Lamb recorded a hattrick in the season opener, along with a team-high three assists. Sophomore Carter Bean chipped in a trio of his own goals.

Cayd Rich and Ty Veres scored solo shots on the afternoon and freshman faceoff Jace Thomas, who won 17 or 29 faceoffs, had a pair of scores and an assist alongside nine ground balls.

Bostin Preisler recorded 11 saves in his first win in goal of the season.

The Knights will head to Pfeiffer University for a 1 p.m. match on Saturday, Feb. 17 in Misenheimer, N.C.
