Men’s Lacrosse Wins Overtime Thriller Over Bridgewater

BRIDGEWATER, Va.—The Southern Virginia University men's lacrosse team pulled off an 11-10 victory over Bridgewater College in overtime Thursday night.

Bridgewater (2-1) was first to get on the board, scoring two goals in the first three minutes of the game. Casey Rich answered with two goals of his own to tie the game early in the second quarter. Each team managed to score another pair to tie the game at four going into halftime.

Southern Virginia (2-1, 1-0 CAC) scored two quick man-up goals in the third quarter to put them ahead 6-5 going into the final quarter of regulation. The Knights combined with the Eagles to score nine goals alone in the fourth quarter.

The Knights once again scored two goals in the first minutes of the quarter until the Eagles went on a 5-2 run, which ended with the game-tying goal with six seconds remaining.

With 37 seconds left on the clock in sudden-victory overtime, Spencer Tunick found Shawn Lamb who converted to give the Knights their second win of the season.

Rich led the Knights' attack with four goals and one assist. Tunick scored a hat trick and added two assists. Lamb contributed two goals and two assists. Ryan Larsen and Cavin Huntsman scored one apiece.

The Knights outshot the Eagles 50 to 27. Carson Franklin played in goal for Southern Virginia and recorded seven saves. 

Last year the Knights fell 13-10 against Bridgewater, and lost 21-10 in 2015. 

Southern Virginia plays Birmingham Southern on Saturday, March 4 at 1:00 p.m. at the Webb School of Knoxville.
