Men's Lacrosse Downed by St. Mary's

BUENA VISTA, Va.—Despite strong goalie play, the Southern Virginia University men's lacrosse team fell to visiting St. Mary's (Md.) by a 25-4 score Saturday afternoon at The Fields in Buena Vista, Va.

The Knights (0-12) played well during the first quarter, trailing only 4-0, but could not keep pace with the Seahawks (5-5) as Southern Virginia surrendered nine goals in the second quarter to trail 13-2 at the half.

St. Mary's maintained control out of the break, scoring six goals to Southern Virginia's two to lead 19-4 at the end of three quarters. The Seahawks iced the game by adding six goals and dominating possession in the final quarter.   

St. Mary's outshot the Knights by a 70-19 ratio and won the ground ball battle, 26-8. The Seahawks also earned 22 of 33 faceoffs for the game, while the Knights were able to clear on 12 of 17 opportunities.

Freshman Nash Wilkey scored two goals to lead Southern Virginia on the afternoon. Mike Bangerter and Joshua Neilson contributed one goal apiece to round out the scoring.

Tyler Cox started at goalie for the Knights and logged 13 saves on the afternoon.

The Knights return to action this Friday in a matchup at conference foe No. 12 York College (Pa.). The first faceoff is scheduled for 4 p.m. at Kinsley Field in York, Pa.
