BUENA VISTA, Va.—With strong goalie play and a collaborative offensive effort, the Southern Virginia University men's lacrosse team scored a season-high eight goals but fell to visiting Beloit College by a 12-8 score Thursday afternoon at The Fields in Buena Vista, Va.
The Bucs (4-1) were the aggressors in the first quarter as they built a 4-0 lead, but the Knights (0-8) took control of the second quarter by scoring four goals to cut the lead to 5-4 at the half.
Beloit set the pace out of the break, scoring six goals to lead 11-6 at the end of three quarters. The Knights battled back during the fourth by adding two goals to cut the lead to 11-8 before Beloit scored the insurance goal with a little over a minute remaining.
Beloit outshot the Knights by a 32-24 ratio, but the teams tied the ground ball battle, 33-33, with Beloit barely edging the Knights in turnovers, 21-20.
Garrett Maw, Nash Wilkey and Mike Bangerter continued to be scoring threats for Southern Virginia as they scored two goals apiece. Ciaran Giroux and Cody Pennington added one goal apiece. Maw, Bangerter and Jason Wynne were all credited with assists.
Newcomer Tyler Cox started at goalie for the Knights and logged ten saves on the night.
