BUENA VISTA, Va.—In its first season as a member of the Capital Athletic Conference, the Southern Virginia University men's lacrosse team has been picked to finish ninth in the league race based on the inaugural CAC preseason coaches' poll.
The Knights, in their second year as a provisional NCAA program, earned eight points in the poll. As a provisional institution, Southern Virginia will not be ineligible for postseason play and its games will not count in the CAC standings, but will be eligible to receive individual honors such as Player of the Week or All-CAC nominations.
St. Mary's College (Md.), last year's CAC champion and ranked No. 16 coming into the season, was edged out for the top spot by No. 4-ranked Salisbury University, which received 62 points to the Sea Hawks' 55. Salisbury has been the CAC's premier team for a large part of the past 20 seasons, claiming 17 league titles and garnering nine NCAA Division III championships along the way.
York College (Pa.) was close behind in third with 54 points, earning one first-place vote in the mix. Mary Washington (40) and Frostburg State (39) were selected to compete for solid positions in the middle of the conference pack and qualify for the postseason league tournament.
Christopher Newport (29), Wesley (20) and Marymount (17) rounded out the final selections.
