Eagles Hand Knights Loss in First Road Game of Season

Written by Matthew McKinney and Sean Dahlin

BUENA VISTA, Va.—Despite a season-high three goals by freshman midfielder David Hostetter (Randolph, Vt.), the Southern Virginia University men's lacrosse team dropped its third consecutive match on Wednesday at NCAA Division III Bridgewater College 27-6.

"David [Hostetter] and Ryan [Larsen] provided our offensive firepower today," said first-year Head Coach Stephen Macurdy. "Each day our team is continuing to progress and is better executing our game plan."

Bridgewater (2-0) jumped ahead early in the first minute scoring two goals from their attackers Kevin Ashcroft and Landon Elmore. Southern Virginia (0-3) answered back at the 3:03 mark in the first quarter when Hostetter scored an unassisted goal to cut the deficit in half 2-1.

The Eagles tacked on two more goals before Knights sophomore Ryan Larsen (Mesa, Ariz.) scored his first unassisted goal of the contest with 1:53 remaining in the first quarter for a 4-2 deficit.

The second quarter went the way of Bridgewater outscoring Southern Virginia 7-1 on route to a 12-3 lead at the break. Hostetter added his second goal five-plus minutes into the second stanza when he scored an unassisted goal during the man-up advantage for the Knights.

Throughout the third quarter, the Eagles extended their lead scoring 11 goals despite netters from Southern Virginia co-captains senior midfielder Joshua Neilson (Turlock, Calif.) and Larsen—who leads the squad with five goals and seven points.

The scoring slowed in the fourth quarter as Southern Virginia recorded one final goal from Hostetter with 3:31 left in the game and Bridgewater added four more on route to the win.

Defensively, junior goalie Justin Thompson (Lehi, Utah) registered a season-high 22 saves.

For Bridgewater, midfielder Rob Simmons led all scorers with four goals while four other players finished with three goals each for the Eagles.

Men's lacrosse will travel on the road to face future Capital Athletic Conference-foe Frostburg State University on Wednesday, March 6.  The game is scheduled to start at 7 p.m. EST.
